John Pistol If you play air hockey you know it’s a high-paced, exciting table game. It’s often thought of with other games such as pool and ping pong. A standard air hockey table is 4′x 6′.
You’ll find the top of the air hockey table is unlike any other you’ll see. It has hundreds of tiny holes. These perforations allow air to flow through which lets the puck glide over the table in a smooth motion. The table mimics an ice hockey rink with its blue and red lines.
An air hockey game begins with one person selected as the server. The server takes the puck and is the first to hit it across the table at their opponent’s goal. The opposing or receiving player can return the serve as soon as it crosses the center line.
It’s illegal to block shots with arms or other parts of the body. Players have just seven seconds to return the shot after it reaches their end of the table. Air hockey players often wait for their opponent to establish a pattern.
To keep the puck on the table, it comes equipped with side rails. This also allows for players to perform trick shots by banking the puck off the sides. The game of air hockey relies on fakes, misdirection and deception to further the game. Rail and bank shots are critical plays in the game and hard to master.
There are slots on either end of the table that are each player’s goal. The purpose of the game is to score by sliding your puck into the opposing goal. The puck is hit by players holding mallets. The first person to reach a specified number is the winner.
Often it’s a good idea to shot straight at the goal. Sometimes a player will succeed by changing the pace of shots frequently so that their opponent can’t get a read on their strategy.
If you ever participate in an air hockey tournament you’ll find the tables are larger and players use more sophisticated strategies. Air hockey tables used in tournaments are larger and players use additional tactics to distract their opponents.
