During the 1980s when Nintendo first entered the video gaming industry it has captured a lead that it has always held. The performance of the company is far from ideal because they have their share of false starts, but taken altogether the performance of the company is characterized by a strong drive that has made it a leader in the industry. This is true especially when you consider their performance when it comes to the portable gaming consoles. The Gameboy and the Nintendo DS are still by far the best selling pieces of portable gaming consoles that has been made available in the market.

There is a growing concern right now as to whether hand held gaming consoles such as the ones made by Nintendo still has a future. That concern is raised by the fact that mobile phone gaming is becoming more popular. With the iPhone and Android devices sweeping the mobile market, games for those devices are fast becoming the rule right now.

The most recent releases of Nintendo hardware such as the 3DS and the DS for which there is the r4 card for an upgrade sold well although they did not meet the expectations of the company, but the problem for Nintendo lies in what can they do in the future.

Are they planning on releasing another portable gaming device? Even if they will come up with the best graphics, customers still would want to use an all in one device. Consumers will not pay attention to Nintendo’s argument that smart phones provide a poor platform for gaming because what they want is convenience.

The only way out for Nintendo in this kind of predicament is to face the fact that the market has undergone a serious change. They need to start developing their games for the mobile phone market and to start licensing their games to other makers of gaming hardware. They have to do that or the company will face an uncertain future. They have to adapt to the changes and the reality of today.
