By tradition, Mages are known to be the glass cannons. Mages excel at dealing massive burst damage while paying the high price of poor mana conservation and regeneration. Characters specced as Mage PvP are in no way different. Mage PvP may be able to dish out some really powerful burst damage but they are often threatened because of their very low survivability.
Arcane Mage PvP Because of the talents housed under this tree, the Arcane Mages are quite easily the best specced for PvPing. Deep into this talent tree, you will gain access to some really useful talents in PvP. These talents include Improved Mana Shield, Arcane Power, Arcane Concentration, and Presence of Mind which can all help with inflicting solid damage.
Although primarily not a melee class, this talent provides the Slow spell which comes in very handy for Mages that are trapped in melee encounters. This allows you some range enough to hurl your enemies down to their graves.
Rolling an Arcane Mage will likely lead you as deep as Empowered and Improved Arcane Explosion and Missiles. These talents may sap out your mana like crazy, but using these also come with a guarantee that by the time you run out of mana, your enemies are already running back to their corpses.
If you’re not going deep in Arcane, you could at least go as far as Arcane Power so you could have a really powerful spell that you can combine with the talents from other trees.
Fire Mage PvP The Fire Mage talent tree ranks second as the choice for PvPing Mages. This talent offers a combination of nuking spells, melee ranged spells as well as some crowd control capabilities.
When rolling a Fire Mage, you’re main problem would be to spend your mana wisely. If you won’t be careful, you could easily run out of mana.
Frost Mage PvP If you’ve chosen to roll a Frost Mage PvP, you’ll be specializing in crowd control, which is actually not bad if you’re working with a group PvP. This may prove a bit of a problem though in solo encounters since you won’t have the same powerful single-target damage spells. Still, with your chill and freeze talents, you’ll annoy the hell out of your opponents. While a Frost Mage’s nuking capabilities aren’t as superb as those of other Mages, its capacity to survive as well as its arsenal of talents for DPS are enough by themselves. PvP-wise, a Frost Mage is a good character for group PvP.
During the earlier stages of your Mage PvP career, you’ll have to content yourself using gears that you find in PvE. As you advance in PvP, you should focus on getting gears that give your Intellect and Stamina some boost, no matter which tree you are following.
